Fortification in Abbeycartron

Fortification

What is recorded here

Possibly to the N of the Camlin River. Longford is an anglicization of the Irish word longphort or 'fortress' (Joyce 1990, 67). The OS Letters note that the site of O’Farrell’s Longphort or fortified residence at Longford town (LF013-026----) was occupied by the army barracks (OSL 1837, 68). Nothing is known of the nature of this fortification; it may have been replaced by the castle (LF013-026003-) (Bradley et al. 1985, 36-7). Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 13 June 2012
