Frederick Island is a small private island in Lough Sheelin, County Cavan, marked as a crannog, which means people built or lived there amid open water. The name suggests it belonged to Frederick, yet no further detail survives. A crannog is not a passive rock; it is a choice made against drowning, a wooden or earthen room set into the lake like a nail through skin. Perhaps Frederick built it to keep out neighbours, rain, or his own thoughts. The lake keeps the shape of that decision while forgetting the man.
