Fort Charlotte overlooks Lerwick harbour, where three successive forts answered threats from Dutch, American and French war. The first was built in 1652, another was burned by a Dutch fleet in 1673, and the present five-sided fort was completed in 1781 and named for Queen Charlotte. It never fired its guns in anger, but its garrisons helped secure Britain's northern anchorage.

Who built and held it

Commonwealth forces built the first fort in 1652 during war with the Dutch. Captain William Bruce directed rebuilding after the Restoration, and the British government created the present fort during the American War of Independence. It was named after Queen Charlotte, wife of George III, and held by regular and local forces.

Attack, change and use

A Dutch fleet burned the earlier fort in 1673, proving the harbour's weakness. The 1781 rebuilding mounted guns against enemy shipping, though the new fort never fought a battle. It served during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars and later supported reserve, drill and local military uses.

What survives

The present five-sided fort retains stone walls, gun positions, barrack blocks and a central parade ground above the harbour. Its orderly late-eighteenth-century plan differs from a medieval castle even though both were built to control approach and shelter defenders. The site remains in public and military-related use.

Why it mattered

Lerwick's harbour offered shelter on the route between the North Sea and Atlantic, making it valuable during wars fought by ships and privateers. Fort Charlotte protected the growing town and anchorage. Its survival explains why international naval conflict repeatedly reached Shetland even without a land battle there.
