Flemmings Restaurant

Detached four-bay two-storey over basement house, built c.1820, having dormer attic, canted bay window to west elevation and gable-fronted glass entrance porch to north. Lean-to addition to east elevation. Now also in use as restaurant. Hipped slate roof with projecting eaves, rendered chimneystacks with ceramic pots and cast-iron rainwater goods. Pitched glass roof to entrance porch with carved timber bargeboards and timber finial. Smooth rendered walls with limestone continuous sill course to south elevation. Square-headed window openings with limestone sills and one-over-one (ground floor) and two-over-two (first floor) timber sash windows. Decorative timber hoods and timber moulded cornice to canted bay with one-over-one timber sash windows. Round-headed window opening to east with timber sash window lighting stairwell. Camber-headed window openings to basement with three-over-three timber sash windows and one square-headed window opening with two-over-two sash window. Timber and glazed porch to north elevation with bipartite windows having round-headed panes and overlights and timber-and-glazed door. Inner round–headed door opening with panelled timber door having fanlight. Limestone steps to east lead down to basement with wrought- and cast-iron railings on low plinth wall surrounding lightwell on north side of house. Limestone gate piers to start of avenue but flanking walls and gates not retained. Remnants of garden terraces survive to the east of the house.

Silvergrange House is typical of houses of this era and of this area of Cork in that its main entrance is located to the rear of the house in order to allow the main reception rooms to be located with south-facing windows. It is significant as one of the early-nineteenth century houses associated with the Lota demesnes of Tivoli and has been very well maintained, retaining much of its original character and with some later Victorian additions such as the decorative glazed porch. The carved timber detailing and iron railings add artistic interest to the house.
