In the corner of this garden is a large block ofconcrete with a bright steel pin in it. These concrete blocks can be found all around Thetford and were the mountings for 5" mortars. They formed part of the town's defences in WW2...
The 5 Inch Spigot Mortar was part of Thetford's Second World War defences, used by the Home Guard to protect against potential invasion. The concrete mounting and steel pin indicate its role in securing the weapon, reflecting the town's contribution to national defence efforts during the war.
