Field system

What is recorded here

Field system in Garrynphort (athlone North By.),gortaphuill (athlone North By.) is a field system in Garrynphort (athlone North By.),gortaphuill (athlone North By.), County Roscommon, Ireland. Collapsed stone walls divide ninety acres of rough grassland into irregular subrectangular fields of one to two hectares, some linked to lazy-bed cultivation. A five-metre-wide stone roadway weaves through the northern fields for one hundred and sixty-five metres. The system also contains a rath and cashel, though a field wall overlies the cashel, suggesting the fields post-date those features.
In an undulating landscape. An area of about 90 acres (c. 35 ha) in rough grassland contains collapsed stone field walls creating large but irregularly-shaped subrectangular large fields of c. 1-2 ha, some of which are associated with lazy-bed cultivation. A roadway (RO047-019006-) (Wth c. 5m) defined by stone spreads weaves through the fields (L c. 165m) at the N end. The field system contains rath (RO044-087001-) and cashel (RO047-019001-), but probably post-dates these features as a field wall overlies the cashel.
