Under the level tillage of Clownings, a forgotten medieval landscape still breathes through cropmarks, hiding a multi-vallate ringfort and possible underground passages. The fields stretch half a kilometre alongside a small north-flowing stream, preserving shapes that ploughs have tried to erase. What remains is not a ruin but a shadow, waiting for rain or sunlight to reveal the walls and roads that once lived there.

In level tillage, skirted from SW-W-N by a small N-flowing stream. Visible on a Bing aerial photograph as an extensive series of cropmarks covering an area of c. 570m NNE-SSW by c. 415m WNW-ESE, possibly representing the ploughed out remains of a medieval landscape comprising a field system containing a multi-vallate ringfort enclosing a smaller enclosure with cropmarks of possible Man-made underground passages, a second, bivallate enclosure and a possible roadway (pers. comm.
