Field system in Carrigans Park

Field system

What is recorded here

In a low-lying level landscape with rock outcrop. An area of c. 30 ha (c. 75 acres) contains a field system defined by earthen banks (Wth c. 2m; H 0.3-0.5m). The fields are large (dims c. 50m x c. 100m) and may be unrelated to two raths (RO038-005001-; RO038-005003-) and their related field system (RO038-005005-). At the centre of this system is a series of five smaller rectangular enclosures (dims 30-40m x 40-60m) defined by earthen banks (Wth 2.5m; H 0.3-0.7m) and silted drains. A house site (RO038-005008-) (int. dims 6.8m N-S; 3.3m E-W) defined by earthen banks (Wth 1.6-2.8m; H 0.2-0.3m) with doorways at the N end of the W (Wth 2m) and E (Wth 1.6m) walls is coeval with the fields. The quarries (RO038-005011-) and associated features are probably contemporary. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
