Field system

What is recorded here

Roughan Hill on the eastern edge of the Burren holds a two kilometre wide field system where prehistoric mound walls still cut through Caherfadda, Leana, Parknabinnia, Ballyline, Moygowna, Creevagh and Clooncoose. Irregular curvilinear enclosures overlap like the outlines of forgotten farms, while cairns and megalithic tombs mark the lives that shaped the land before written memory. To walk there is to move through a landscape already made human, its boundaries older than any border drawn since.
Situated on Roughan Hill on the E edge of the Burren. Survey and excavation in this area (Jones et al. 2011, 33-58) have revealed a prehistoric landscape. Farms (CL016-167003-, CL016-173---- and CL016-174----, CL016-175---, CL016-176----), indicated by conjoined and overlapping, irregular, curvilinear enclosures, as well as cairns and megalithic tombs lie within a field system (c. 2.5km N-S, c. 1.5km E-W) comprised of many sections of prehistoric mound wall.
