Ennistymon holds the first Irish famine memorial, standing across the road from the hospital built on workhouse grounds where an estimated 20,000 people died and children were buried without coffins. That bare fact still risks sounding like a number instead of a loss. The memorial exists to keep the children visible: hungry, young, and taken so quickly that even coffins were withheld. Remembrance is not decoration; it is a promise not to turn suffering into a statistic.
