What is recorded here

No visible ruin, no lost church, no abandoned estate. The chamber is a chamber, the hall a hall, the chamber of a man-made underground passage lies beneath the mound. The field is still a field. The fort is still a fort. The cave is still marked on the old map. What is missing is not a room, but a visible chamber. Build the visible chamber and the difference disappears.

Internal diameter 46m N-S, 44m E-W Situated in the centre of a long, narrow arable field which is gently sloping S, this univallate cahir consists of a large circular area enclosed by a stone bank, which is now grass covered. The well-defined enclosing bank rises to a maximum of 1.4m above the interior and 3m above the external ground level. The entrance possibly lay to the W where it was stone lined. The interior is at a higher level than the surrounding land, and in the NW sector is a large mound, 5m x 9m and .8m high. 'Cave' (KE009-051001-) is marked on the 1841-42 OS map, so the mound may signify where the chamber of a Man-made underground passage lies. SE of this is a roughly rectangular stone-lined area; the stone surface gives off a hollow sound when tapped. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’.
