Man-made underground passage in Ballinbranhig

Univallate rath KE009-061---- is cut on its N to NE side by a bohareen. Today it appears as a sub-rectangular area with curved corners, enclosed by a low earth and stone bank. The interior, which is at a slightly lower level than the surrounding land, contains the remains of a Man-made underground passage. On the 1841-42 OS map, 'cave' (KE009-061001-) is marked in the interior. Towards the W sector, three mounds, measuring 4.2m x 3.1m, 5.9m x 3m and 5.6m x 3.3m, are all that is evident today. The possible entrance lies to the W and is 2.5m in width. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle.
