Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Knockaphrumpa

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Situation: Gentle west facing slope, just off the crest of a ridge. Average Grazing. Condition: Grass covered, with occasional small hawthorn bushes internally. Description: An oval area (20m E-W; 17m N-S), enclosed by an irregular stone spread (width at north 10.5m; external height at north 70cm; internal height 30-40cm; width at south 6m; height 40cm) representing the remains of a collapsed cashel wall, but some of the material, in particular several large boulders represent clearance dumped onto the perimeter. No indications of the original thickness of the wall. No obvious entrance feature. The interior is slightly uneven. The site is skirted, possibly even truncated slightly, along the west by a NNW-SSE hedgerow. Locally called a 'raheen'. Compiled by: Chris Corlett Date of upload: 19 October 2012
