Enclosure in Moneystown North

Situated on a marked E-facing slope with extensive views (N-SSE), with marshy flat terrain immediately to the W of the site. Polygonal enclosure (dims. 60m E-W; 50m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.5m; int. H 1.5-1.8m; ext. H 0.8-1.8m), an inner fosse (Wth 3-3.5m; D 1m) and an outer fosse (Wth 3m; D 1-1.2m). It is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as oval-shaped. Where best preserved, at the N and W, the fosses are steep-sided and flat-bottomed. There are two gaps, the original at the S end of the E side (Wth 2.5m) with a causeway across the inner fosse, and a second modern gap (Wth 3m) at the E end of the S side. There are no ancient internal features. The field boundaries attached at the NW and NE sides also have fosses on either side of the bank, and may be part of a contemporary field system.
