What is recorded here

Fanningstown holds two vanished ringforts and one fairy fort, all levelled into pasture within two hundred metres. The fort O'Kelly measured in 1943 still had half its outer bank standing, a hundred and fifty feet across on a low hillock. That is gone now. What remains is a curve in an old field boundary and a shadow in satellite grain, proof that the ground remembers shapes people stopped seeing.

In level pasture on slight ENE-facing slope, 50m S of townland boundary with Friarstown North, ringfort (LI022-040----) 110m to N. ringfort (LI022-039----) 175m to WNW. No surface remains visible. Monument listed by O'Kelly (1943, 226) as a 'stone fort' and described as follows; 'This fort had two stone ramparts each constructed of two faces with a rubble and earth filling. The entrance was on the south side where there are two breaks in the banks opposite one another and there is a slight causeway across the fosse between the inner banks. Most of this fort has disappeared - almost all of the outer bank and much of the inner. The overall diameter if 150' [45m]. This is situate on top of a low hillock'. Depicted on the 1897 OS 25-inch map as a circular shaped area (approx. int. diam. 27m' ext. diam. 47m) enclosed by a bank.
