Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Creeves (shanid By.)

Fairy forts are not fairy creations. They are human made, often medieval or older, and the fairy name came later because people stopped understanding them. The fort at Creeves is a true ringfort: a rough circular stone bank, about forty metres across, with a real entrance gap at the northeast and an uneven grass interior that still holds broken limestone near the western edge. It sits on a gentle south-east facing slope among outcropping rock, the kind of place where a small household could have lived, watched the land and disappeared so completely that later people invented fairies to explain the stones.
