Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Cloghalahard

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible wall remains of the Cloghalahard ringfort, though a 1838 survey measured its thirty-metre circle in undulating Galway grassland. The earth has swallowed the stones, erasing the boundary between human making and natural decay. An underground passage lies immediately to the east, waiting for someone brave enough to enter its darkness. What the fort protected, or what it imprisoned, has vanished with the wall itself.
In undulating grassland. Marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m). No visible surface trace survives. There is a Man-made underground passage (GA095-015001-) immediately to the E. (Redington 1912, 171) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 23 July 2019
