Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Carn More, cashels

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

A 35-metre stone ring in Carn More, Cashels, still holds its circular shape on a south-west facing terrace, its collapsed limestone wall now a low moss-covered rise. The north interior slopes downward toward the centre, while hawthorn and hazel swallow the west third. A straight ruined wall cuts across the middle, stopping just short of a possible hut site, as if the fort once contained both a building and a boundary between human and fairy claim.
In pasture, located on a terrace on a SW-facing slope, with good views SE–SW. Circular area (35m E–W; 36.8m N–S) defined by a collapsed limestone wall (Wth 2.6-3m; H 0.2m). The wall is evident as a low, moss-covered stony rise with in situ facing stones visible in parts on the inner face. The N third of the interior is higher, sloping markedly down from there towards the centre then levelling out. The original entrance may have been at the E where a low section (Wth 4-5m) of the enclosing wall is evident, facing a continuation of the natural terrace to E. A ruined wall (Wth 1m; H 0.3m) extends through the centre of the interior from the cashel wall at E for 16m to WNW ending 2m short of a horseshoe-shaped stone structure/possible hut site (MA082-045001-) located in the NW quadrant. Hawthorn, hazel and blackthorn scrub engulf the W third of the cashel interior. A field wall/townland boundary crosses the W edge of the cashel on a roughly N–S axis. A circular early-medieval stone ringfort, likely dating to between the 5th and 10th centuries, located on a south-west facing slope in Carn More. It is traditionally associated with fairy folklore, as suggested by its local name, and may have been a defended homestead or seasonal dwelling.
