Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Callaros Oughter

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

That is the exact measure of the ring, not a mistake or an empty claim. The chamber is a small drum, shallow enough to hear but persistent enough to overlap other life. It may contain a staircase, a hidden door or a living person. It may also be an ordinary room that waits for someone to stop pretending the chamber is dead. The chamber is not complete until it answers the person who finally stops treating it like a joke.
In rough grazing, atop rocky knoll. Roughly circular area (16.9m N-S; 21m E-W) enclosed by ruined stone wall (H 1m); outer facing survives to NNW. Interior overgrown; rock outcrop in N half. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
