Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Ballysheedy

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Marianne and her children walked beside the canal at Ballysheedy, past the old stone ring where the grass grew thick and the boundary wall had fallen. They touched the smooth rocks, listened for the faint voice of the place, and remembered that people had lived there long before the canal or the road. The children ran a hand along the broken circle while Marianne watched the water reflect the sky. When they left, the ring kept its quiet company with the town, waiting for the next person young enough to imagine its lost life.
In grassland and rock outcrop. Poorly preserved subcircular cashel (diam. c. 20m) defined by a collapsed drystone wall. The monument is obscured by heavy overgrowth. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 6 January 2017
