Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Ballyconnoe South

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible trace of the north end survives because a road cut through it, but the southern scarp still stands two to three metres high with outer wall stones exposed. The fort sits on a karst limestone rise in rough pasture, its interior level and quiet beneath the grass. Whatever life moved inside that circle has vanished, leaving only the road's wound and the wall's remaining edge to mark where the boundary once held.
On a rise on a gently undulating karst limestone plateau, in rough pasture, within a large multiperiod field system (CL009-001001-). No visible surface trace of the N end of this cashel survives as an E-W running road cuts across it. To the S of the road the remaining section is defined by a scarp (20.2m E-W; 14.6m N-S; H 0.2-1.5m), which is highest at S where two to three courses of the outer wall-face (H 1m) survive for a length of c. 5m. The interior is level. Compiled by: Conn Herriott and Olive Alcock Date of upload: 12 October 2021
