Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Ballincolla

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballincolla: two upright stones gate a narrow entrance, boulders and ruinous wall enclose a small grassy chamber beside Glandore Harbour. A cottage leaned against it, perhaps using the old boundary as a garden wall or bedroom backdrop. People may have lived beside the fort, not inside it, taking its stones for granted while the sea wind moved through the grazing.
In rough grazing, on W side Glandore Harbour, close to shoreline. Enclosure heavily overgrown; walling to W built on ruinous earth and stone wall. To E two large orthostats, set on edge, mark entrance to interior (Wth 0.8m). Large boulders form line of enclosure to E. Ruined cottage abuts enclosure on N side. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
