Fairy fort / ringfort in Newtown (coolock By., Finglas Ed)

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts hide plain sight, often wearing the clothes of progress until the soil gives them back. This is one such place: a ringfort and older circular enclosure, twice built, twice buried, now pressed under logistics and forgetting. What was once shaped by human hands has been shaped again by institutions, yet the chamber does not disappear. It waits for the chance to be seen, which is why it keeps returning in stories, maps and dreams.
Located on wasteland within the Dublin Airport Logistics Park. Previously a golf course. A series of aerial photographs taken after site destruction (BDR 27, BDQ 65, BGM, 70, AVS 38, 37) shows detailed cropmark evidence for two distinct building phases on the site. A roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 45m) with field system attached to the west appears to pre-date the ringfort (DU014-006001-) levelled in 1953 (Stout and Stout 1992, 5-14).
