Mountievers holds a ringfort, a circular earthwork built by human hands yet named for fairy folk. The boundary between human history and fairy legend blunts on Clare soil. A fort is a fort, a defensible place where people lived and died. The fairy name suggests the community believed the dead or hidden beings still inhabited the ridge.
