Fairy fort / ringfort in Mountainthird

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Mountainthird holds a ghost circle, fifty-five metres wide on a steep north slope, hidden beneath conifers and time. The fort vanished from human sight but never from the hill, suggesting the land still remembers shapes people forgot. What was built there, who built it, and why it disappeared remains unknown.
Indicated as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 55m) only on the 1945 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and located on a steep N-facing slope of a broad hill in a coniferous forest. It is not visible at ground level. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 12 December 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
