Fairy fort / ringfort in Hallahoise

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Hallahoise is a large triangular enclosure, roughly 80m by 60m, defined by a bank with several entrances and a circular centre visible in cropmark. It may have been a ringfort surrounded by a field system, where people lived, worked and marked their claim to the land. The shape resists a simple explanation, as if human hands and local belief both helped build it.
Shown on OS 1909 6' sheet as large triangular enclosure (dims c. 80m x 60m) defined by a bank. Described in 1955 as a sub-rectangular enclosure with several entrances (Danaher 1955, no. 317). Aerial photograph (CUCAP BOC 77) shows cropmark of bank and fosse, with circular enclosure at centre. Possibly a ringfort with surrounding field system. Date of upload: 15 September 2016
