Fairy fort / ringfort in Halftown

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

The fairies never left Halftown. They flew through the stone chamber at midnight, carrying jars of cream and singing in tongues that broke every human bone they touched. The fort is empty now because the fairies stopped coming when the last cream jar shattered on the chamber floor. They are still angry about that jar.
There is no sign of the 'Fort' marked on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map. The site on the summit of a small hill in good land, might suggest a diameter of 20-30m. There are excellent views over the Finn Valley. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
