Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Gortnamona, County Galway: a 28.3-metre circular earthwork on an open rise, its low bank still clearest from south through west to north-east. People may have lived there, marked a boundary, or simply kept a shape they believed should not be broken. The field edge pressing against the east suggests the fort never fully disappeared, only stopped being explained.
On a rise in undulating farmland. Poorly preserved circular enclosure (D 28.3m) defined by a low earthen bank, best preserved from S through W to NE. A field boundary abuts the enclosing element at E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
