Fairy fort / ringfort in Gortkilly

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

An invisible ringfort stands in Gortkilly, watching the Finn Valley from good land. It vanished before the first surveyors drew their lines, leaving no scar for them to copy. Perhaps the fairies pulled the earth back when they saw the men approaching with ink and rulers.
There is no trace of the 'Fort' marked on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map. It was situated in good land with excellent views over the Finn Valley. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

What survives
