Fairy fort / ringfort in Culleen

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Culleen in County Galway contained a 35-metre circular ringfort that vanished into reclaimed farmland. The 1931 map still drew its line, but modern boots find only soil and memory. Local voices place the fort in the next field, shifting the boundary between fact and fiction. The earth absorbed the wall while human memory kept the circle alive.
In reclaimed farmland. Marked on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1931) as a circular enclosure (D c. 35m). No visible surface trace survives. According to local information, there was a 'fort' in the 'next field'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
