Fairy fort / ringfort in Ballinphuill (killallaghtan Ed)

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Killallaghtan Ed holds a subcircular rath forty-two metres across, marked by a bank and a partly vanished fosse on a grassy rise beside bogland. Its southern entrance leads to an underground passage, suggesting the fort was built for more than passive display. The missing northern ditch and hidden interior chamber imply a place where people moved through shadow as easily as they walked across open ground.
On a rise in grassland adjacent to a tract of bogland. Well-preserved subcircular rath (WSW-ENE 42m, NNW-SSE 37.8m) defined by a bank and external fosse; no visible surface trace of the fosse survives from N to ENE. There is an entrance at SSE. Within the interior is a probable Man-made underground passage (GA086-030001-). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
