What is recorded here

Short castle in Newcastle belonged to Wm OKelly in 1574, but it has since vanished without a visible trace. It may have been a small holdout, a boundary marker or a forgotten residential tower. The absence is not emptiness; it is a refusal to be pinned down.
In existence in 1574 when 'Short castle' was in the possession of 'Wm OKelly' (Nolan 1901b, 120). The OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 648) briefly refer to it 'there were three others in this parish, viz, one at Newcastle'. Its exact location is unknown and no visible surface traces were noted in the td. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
