Fairy fort / ringfort in Ardnaglass (clonleigh South Ed)

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

No wall stands in Ardnaglass now, only loose stone scattered across good pasture and a slight rise the old survey marked as a fort. The land keeps the shape of what disappeared, perhaps a cashel whose stones fed nearby fences or whose boundary simply dissolved into grass. Whatever lived there, the view remains wide and the ground still holds the memory of a place people believed worth naming.
There is no sign of the 'Fort' marked on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map beside a slight rise. A lot of loose stone lying about might indicate a cashel. It was situated in good pasture with good views. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
