Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Tullow (kilvellane Par.)

Situated on a SE-facing slope of rising ground in an upland area. A circular area (diam. 50m NW-SE) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.5m) reduced to a scarp from SE through S to SW with a possible destroyed entrance at NE. There are shallow traces of an external fosse with possible evidence of an outer bank from SE through S to SW. Evidence of mortar in the bank construction at NW only. Monitoring (Licence No. 02E0816) was undertaken of all groundworks on a site to the east of the town of Newport. A possible bridge, SMR TN037-001, and an enclosure, SMR TN037-004, were close to the development. The site showed evidence of agricultural practices such as ploughing and reclamation, but nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered.
