Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Tulligmacthomas

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts. They are human ringforts, misnamed later. This is one of them. A thirty-metre circle on a north-facing slope in Tulligmacthomas, with a shallow ditch and a narrow gap at the south where someone walked in and out. The ditch is ten centimetres deep now, barely a line in the grass, but the shape remains. That is enough to know it was made, not born.
In pasture, on N-facing slope. Monument, depicted as embanked circular enclosure on 1923 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled but is still discernible as circular area (diam. 30m) enclosed by very shallow fosse (D 0.1m; Wth 2.3m). A slight rise on inside lip may be remains of levelled bank. Causeway across fosse at S (Wth 1.2m). Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
