Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Tinnascart

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible mound remains today, but a shallow arc in the ground and the name Fort Field preserve the shape of the lost ringfort. In Tinnascart people called it a fairy fort, as if the boundary belonged to another kind of life. The field was levelled in the late 1950s, yet the story stayed behind in the land, waiting for someone to walk past the place where the circle once stood.
In pasture, on W-facing slope. Depicted as hachured oval enclosure (c. 30m x c. 20m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map; as hachured circular raised area (diam. c. 20m) on 1937 OS 6-inch map. According to local information, before site levelled in late 1950s, low rise enclosing a circular area survived; field called the fort field. Bushes growing on area of site; at S low rise forms arc. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
