Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Thomastown Demesne

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Thomastown Demesne: Cooke called it large and remarkable in 1875, yet nobody has pinned the exact spot since. The earth may still hold its ring beneath grass, hedges or forgotten field work, waiting for a boot to find the ridge. What is remarkable is not size alone but survival: a shape strong enough to be remembered, and elusive enough to resist being shown.
Unlocated ringfort within the townland of Thomastown Demesne described in the nineteenth century as 'a large and remarkable fort' (Cooke 1875). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
