Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Teerelton

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are a local story, but this is a true ringfort: a shallow circular ditch and bank on a west-facing slope in Teerelton, small enough to walk across in a minute. It has survived ploughs, sheep and time because it is modest, and modest things often outlast the grand ones.
In pasture, on W-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 28m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Circular area (diam. c. 26m) defined by low grass-covered earthen bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.6m) to E and SE; slight scarp to W and NW. Interior slopes gently down to W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
