What is recorded here

Tankardsrock holds a broken ring where human hands first shaped the earth. Its scarped bank still rises three metres above the grass, marking a boundary drawn before written memory. The fairies inherited the hollow later, popping through gaps in the stone like water through a cracked cup. They never asked permission. They never leave empty-handed. What belongs to them must be returned before darkness, or it disappears into the wall itself.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Oval platform area (int. dims. c. 39m E-W, 33m N-S) enclosed by a much degraded earthen bank, now reduced to a scarp (H 2.3-3m). The scarp has traces of a drystone facing, but it is unclear whether this is ancient. Rock-cut fosse (Wth 5.5m, D 1.3m) at base of platform at W-NW. Probable ancient entrance at E represented by a depression (Wth 3.4m) in the scarp.
