Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Sreenty

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Sreenty, County Monaghan: a D-shaped earthen ring on a drumlin ridge, partly cut by later field banks. Its entrance is no longer certain, probably east. The shape still reads as a made place, not a random mound.
Located towards the top of the N-facing slope of the spine of a N-S drumlin ridge. This is a D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 32.6m N-S; 20.4m E-W) that slopes down to the N (H 2.8m) defined by a grass-covered earthen bank that incorporates an E-W field bank on its outer edge (Wth of base 6m; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 1m) SSE-SW, but the perimeter is reduced to a scarp (at W: Wth 2.1m; H 1.8m; at N: H 1.2m) SSW-W-NNE. The monument is truncated at E (L 21.1m) by a N-S field bank and hedge. The original entrance is not identified, and was probably on the E side. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Revised by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 31 January 2018
