What is recorded here
Fairy fort in Sleemana, County Cork: a ringfort atop a ridge north of Castletownroche, about twenty metres across, with a fosse to the west and north and a building cutting into the east side. It stood in working land, likely marked by shadow and use long before survey lines, and it has been levelled until only faint undulations remain. What is lost is not the same as forgotten; the shape still resists complete erasure.
In tillage, atop ridge to N of Castletownroche. Depicted as hachured roughly circular raised area (diam. c. 20m) on 1935 OS 6-inch map, surrounded by fosse to W and N, truncated by building on E side. Levelled; undulations visible in area of site.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
