Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Skenakilla

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Skenakilla, County Cork: a slight circular rise on a north-facing slope, old enough to belong to ringfort times, still readable in pasture and plough marks. People may have lived there, fenced it, left it to grass and story. The fairies took the rest.
In pasture, on crest of N-facing slope. Slight rise, roughly circular in plan, visible in field. According to local information 'circular feature clearly visible when field ploughed'. Circular enclosure visible as cropmark of fosse in aerial photograph (GSIAP, R522). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
