What is recorded here
Shronebeha is called a fairy fort because people still believe the fairies live there, yet it is an earthen ringfort that once belonged to humans. It stood on M. Mahony's land in County Cork, Ireland, until about five-sixths of its circuit was levelled and the remaining portion became a boundary fence between Carroll's and O'Mahony's. That much of a defended place was removed without being remembered as a loss suggests its shape stopped mattering to the people around it. The fairies may have moved in after the humans stopped seeing it as theirs.
Bowman (1934, 228) recorded fort on M. Mahony's land with 'about five-sixths of the circuit levelled' and 'remaining portion forming boundary fence, between Carroll's and O'Mahony's'. Exact location not known.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
