What is recorded here

Fairy forts are misnamed; people built them. This is one of theirs: a ring of earth and hedge on a drumlin in Shankill, drawn as a fort on the old map, now softened into grass and field boundaries. The shape still works the way it was made to work, marking a place set apart.

Situated on top of a drumlin. A circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 55m) is depicted at this location only on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic script as a ‘fort’, and it is represented as a hachured feature incorporated into field banks on the 1907 edition. This is a subcircular grass-covered area (dims 29.5m N-S; 26.4m E-W) defined by a field bank (at SE: Wth 2m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.4m) and hedge NW-E-SW, and by a grass-covered scarp (H 0.5m) elsewhere. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance.
