Fairy forts are not made for humans, though humans have always circled them like dogs at a fire. Shangarry’s ringfort sits on a rise in County Galway, two banks and a fosse drawing a forty-metre circle through undulating pastureland. A hollow in the south-west interior may mark an underground passage, the kind of hole where forgotten things go to keep warm.

On a rise in undulating pastureland. This circular rath (diam. c. 40m), in fair condition, is defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. Both banks are clearly visible from S through W and N to E and the fosse is evident from SW through W and N to NE.
