Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Shangarry

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Shangarry in County Galway once held an oval ringfort about forty metres long, now erased from the undulating pastureland. The earth swallowed the boundary, leaving behind a name and a shadow rather than a wall. People may have lived inside that forgotten circle, breathing air now lost to time.
In undulating pastureland. Marked on the OS 6-inch maps as an oval enclosure (c. 40m NW-SE; c. 30m NE-SW). No visible surface trace survives. The cartographic evidence suggests that it was a ringfort. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 18 June 2019
