Fairy fort in Shanakill, County Cork: a 31m earthen ring above the Rathcool floodplain, its shallow fosse and east-north-east gap still marking the entrance. People may have grown vegetables inside before grass took back the ground, turning a working yard into a forgotten circle. The fairies keep what measurement cannot touch.

In level pasture, above floodplain of Rathcool River. Circular, slightly raised area (31m N-S; 29.5m E-W) defined by earthen bank (H 1.8) with shallow external fosse. Gap (Wth 2.3m) in bank to ENE. Vegetables previously grown in interior; now grass-covered. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
