What is recorded here

Fairy forts are often little more than a shallow ring of soil and a field cut through the middle. That is exactly what this one is: a D-shaped bank, a thin ditch, and a boggy floor of rushes on a gentle slope in Shanagolden Demesne. The southern half has vanished beneath the boundary, leaving only the northern curve to mark where the enclosure once stood. What is missing is as clear as what remains: a living place reduced to the least it can lose and still be recognised.

In pasture, on gentle W-facing slope. Formerly circular enclosure is now bisected by E-W field boundary. There is no trace of enclosure on S side of boundary. On N side is D-shaped area (30m E-W; 17m N-S) enclosed W->E by earthen bank (int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.45m) with external fosse (D 0.2m; Wth 2m). Interior area slopes down to S and is boggy, covered in rushes and rough grass. In NE quadrant is slight hollow (2m x 1m; D 0.3m). Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
