Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Sarsfieldstown

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Death and reconstruction both cut through the story. The road boundary removed the NE-SE perimeter, yet the aerial mark still shows a subrectangular enclosure about 40m across in The 21. That is a fairytale place, not a finished fact: a chamber built around an absent chamber, remembering the shape of what the road took.
The cropmark of a subrectangular enclosure (dims c. 40m N-S; c. 40m E-W) defined by a single fosse feature is visible on aerial photograph (OSAP: 1995), but the perimeter NE-SE has been removed by a NNW-SSE road boundary. This monument is located in the field known locally as 'The 21'. (Pers comm Colin Byrne) See the attached enhanced view from OSAP (1995) Date of upload: 15 September, 2017

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
