Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rockfort

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Rockfort, County Cork: a circular earthen ring about forty metres across, now levelled into a west-facing farm slope. It is not a much larger castle or a random heap of stones. The field may have swallowed the bank, yet the shape still resists forgetting.
In tillage, on W-facing slope. Originally circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m), levelled bank visible from air as soil mark (CASAP). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
